If you didn’t know already, there are many different types of plumbing pipes to choose from. Each type of pipe uses a different material and is best suited for a particular type of plumbing job. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
PVC or polyvinyl chloride pipes are used mainly for vents or drains, basically hot or cold potable water applications, and are quite popular in the plumbing industry but they are much easier to work with and lighter than steel pipes. These types of pipes are installation friendly and are easily recognizable by their NSF-PW and NSF-61 markings (for health regulation purposes.)
PEX
If you want something simple for your DIY plumbing project, PEX is the way to go or if you need simple piping for your water supply at home or in the office. While they might cost more initially, these color coded pipes are very flexible, easy to maintain, and easy to install anywhere. However, it is recommended to only use these indoors as UV rays can damage them in outdoor applications.
Cast Iron
Cast iron pipes are used for sewer lines and are heavier and older than most other plumbing pipes. There are two different types –– the bell and spigot and threaded joint types (the latter being more expensive). These are mainly used on big systems but there are some 4” that can be used in residential applications.
Copper
There are two different types of copper pipes –– flexible copper pipes and rigid copper pipes.
If you have a short run to a refrigerator or a water heater, for example, then flex copper is the pipe to use. It is easy to bend, easy to cut with a hacksaw, but is not recommended for outdoor use.
If you are an experienced DIYer or professional plumber, then rigid copper piping is a major go-to. More importantly, this type of pipe is the ideal choice for water supply lines. Why? Because it is cleaner to use compared to PVC pipes. Also, while it is easily cut, connecting takes an expert solder.
Steel
When it comes to steel piping, you have two choices –– stainless steel and galvanized steel (and it is best that you don’t confuse the two.)
Galvanized steel pipes were commonly used back in the day for residential applications, however, they are nowadays rarely used on new homes. Unlike stainless steel, they can rust easily and are mainly used for non-potable water applications. Side note: not recommended for DIYers.
Then there is stainless steel with its shiny, luxurious looks –– and with it a higher price tag compared to galvanized steel. This type of pipe is perfect for coastal areas or areas where corrosion is likely. One can get them in various sizes, lengths, and in either rigid or flexible.
Brass
Brass pipes last longer than other plumbing materials granted that they are graded 85% or more. They don’t rust inside and one can guarantee no friction loss in the interior. Brass pipes are easy to thread, compared to their steel brothers, and are ideal for hot water applications like wells and water tanks.
