Owning your own home is incredibly exciting, however, it can be stressful too. You are going to be responsible for anything that goes wrong with the home and keeps it looking neat, tidy and in the best condition possible.

But if you are new to owning a property, where do you start? What things do you need to think about when it comes to home improvement and maintenance? Moving into a house can be quite costly, which is why many people like to go down the diy route. If you’ve been asking yourself, “where does this Aluminium Tube go?”, then it might be best to get a little assistance in this department. But it never harmed anyone to give things a try. Your overall goal is to have the house you have always dreamed of.

To help you, we have put together a home improvement and maintenance checklist, which might give you the guidance that you need.

Bleed your radiators

Bleed your radiators
Finding that your heating bills are a little more expensive then you thought they would be? If this is true for you, then you may find that there is a problem with your radiators. A regular maintenance task that you should be carrying out is to bleed your radiators. A radiator that is full of air is one that is only going to be operating at half the power which means that you need to keep your eye on them. Bleeding your radiators is relatively easy to do and won’t take you too much time. However, it could really help with the effectiveness and efficiency of heating your home.

Install a circuit breaker

Install a circuit breaker
Do you have an old style fuse box in your home? Found that when a fuse blows, it is incredibly difficult to go through and find out which one is causing the problem. Instead of this, you should install a circuit breaker, these boxes have switches that will show you which fuse needs replacing with ease.

Tackle any damp

Tackle any damp
Damp is a big problem in any home, damp is also something that you need to sort out and stamp out as soon as you can. The earlier that you work on any damp problems that you have, then the easier and cheaper it will be to fix. Ignoring it will make the problem expand and get even worse. Which is going to end up costing you a whole lot of money.

Check on those gutters

Check on those gutters
Your gutters are responsible for catching the rain off of your roof and sending it back down to the ground. Over time, however, your gutters can get blocked with debris such as bird nests, leaves, and even mud or moss. When this debris builds up the gutter will become blocked and the rainwater won’t have anywhere to go, apart from inside.

Hoover or sweep under all the furniture

During our weekly, twice weekly or even daily hoovering sessions, chances are that we don’t pick up or move all our pieces of furniture to clean under them. This means that over time, there will be a build up of dust and dirt. Plan in to move those big pieces every month, sweeping or hoovering under them to keep the room as clean and tidy as you can.

Wash your curtains

Wash your curtains
Much like underneath those big bits of furniture, our curtains can accumulate a lot of dust in them over time. You may not realize it until you open them or try to move them, only to release a stream of dust. You need to wash your curtains on a regular basis in order to cut down on the dust, every 3 months should be fine. Not only will this keep them looking fresh but it will also help to keep the air in your room clean and fresh too.

Install a low profile underfloor heating

Heating your home is one of the costliest things, so if you can find a way to better heat it and in turn save yourself money then this is definitely something that you should go for. A great option is to install a low profile underfloor heating system, not only does this help to heat a space such as a conservatory or extension in your home, but it is also relatively easy to install and as it is low profile, it won’t have too much of an effect on your home.

As you can see, there are lots of things to think about when it comes to keeping your home in check, why not plan in some time to go through this checklist and see what you can do to make sure that your home looks the best that it can? Whether it is a big job that is going to take time or a simple task that you can do in your spare time, you will soon have a home that you can be proud of!
