Millennials and Minimalism
Millennials are staying true to “less is more” fashion and you can see that in plenty of modern homes. Japandi trend is all over the place. What is Japandi? It is a perfect mix of Scandinavian and Japanese home interior ideas. On the one hand, there is Scandinavian practicality — no carpets, lots of wood, clear spaces. On the other, Japanese love for minimalism and clean lines. In other words, plenty of light, space, and light colors.
Pushing It to the Limit
Nevertheless, you may be surprised that not all millennials are Japandi’s fans so they go in the utterly opposite direction. Think abundance of details. Mixing various styles, adding as many cushions as possible on the sofa/bed, painting every single wall with intricate patterns or having wallpapers that are almost vintage-looking. Maximalism is taking over this year too.
Grandmilennial Style
This one is similar to the above, as more and more millennials are keen on decorating their homes with pleated lampshades, wicker furniture, and lots of rugs on shiny flooring (at least wood floor protection is always in fashion). As the name suggests, grandmillennial style seems to be paying tribute to family bonds and family culture.
This one also reminds us of country cottage style, with traditional touches, plenty of ornaments and wood elements.
Green Homes
Millennials are much more environmentally involved than the previous generations. Hence, you can expect for a millennial home to have some features that make it greener than it originally was. It could be a couple of solar panels on the roof, compost in the back yard, a kitchen full with energy efficient appliances, or smart thermostats that you control with your cell phone.
Plenty of Plants
Millennials really do put their money where their mouth is. They literally take care of the environment in the most basic way by having their homes filled with as many houseplants as possible.
While they have the urge to travel, Generation Y also feels a great need to nurture something, be it pets or vegetation. Houseplants are even trending Instagram and other social networks and hashtags #plantparent are everywhere. Generation Z is said to enjoy them too. As plants aid your mental and physical wellbeing, loving plants goes hand in hand with another trend millennials adore — wellness.
There you have it, five clear signs you’re in a home of a true millennial. Admittedly, there’s one trend that has appeared in 2021 due to coronavirus pandemic and toilet paper shortage — installing bidet toilets. However, we’ll just have to wait and see if millennials have become exceptionally keen on this trend too.
