Finding the right cushions for your home is usually all about patterns and colors. But have you ever considered the kind of foam that’s being used inside? They’re not all the same and can really make the difference in which cushion you get. If you didn’t know about the kinds of foam that are used, here are the five types of foam that are typically used in cushions.
1. Visco Elastic Foam
This is also known as memory foam and is one of the medium foam cushions that are good at keeping their original shape. They do allow for the most immersion, contouring to the shape of your body when you sit or lie back on them. They work pretty well as a top layer on a cushion. It’s pretty low maintenance, but it can be a bit on the heavy side and tend to retain heat and moisture,
2. High Resiliency Foam
High resiliency foam tends to spring back into its original shape once you’re no longer on it. It’s quite durable, can withstand repeated compression, and maintains its shape over a long period of time. It works well as a base layer for cushions because it provides a lot of stability and structure.
3. Fluid Inserts
Many people believe that gel/fluid is the best medium to protect the skin, but that is not necessarily true. Although it is great at keeping cool and providing more support to the bonier parts of the body, the gel can tend to migrate and result in high pressure points that are uncomfortable. Depending on the style, the cushion may need to be kneaded or readjusted in order to properly redistribute the gel/fluid throughout.
4. Air
Air cushions can come in one of two forms: air bladders or air cells. Air cells are bubbles that have been frozen in size and shape, while air bladders are soft pouches that are filled with air. In both cases, they are great at distributing pressure so that there are no sore spots on your body and can be adjustable to your needs. However, the softness of the materials can affect the transfer of air and the foam does require some maintenance over time to be as comfortable as possible.
5. Honeycomb
Honeycomb cushions are made from thermoplastic material and formed to make a hexagonal honeycomb shape. It is known for being quite breathable, lightweight, and low maintenance. There are a few drawbacks, however, such as not being adjustable for certain conditions, leading to discomfort over a long period of time.
There is always the option to consider a combination of foam and air or gel to provide as much comfort as possible. But these tend to be a bit heavier and a little more pricey and may need maintenance in the long haul.
