Many of us aren’t lucky enough to have big mansions with what seems like endless square footage of space in our rooms to decorate and accessorize like the rich and famous. However, just because we don’t have space, it doesn’t mean our homes can’t look good. Even hotels are jumping on the small space trend these days with ‘pod’ hotels in some places going for upwards of $100 a night. Here are our top tips for making the most out of your cozy home.
Work Upwards and Make the Most of Wall Space
I come across so much negative space in smaller homes and apartments yet they still manage to look cluttered. The issue? They’re focusing too much on floor space and not building up. All their storage is in ottomans, cabinets and cupboards, or, even worse, is just strewn across the floor. Walls can provide crucial space in a small home for shelving and extra cabinets.
Working up also works in the bedroom. “Having bunk beds can save a lot of space in a children’s room, meaning more space for them to play and they usually find it fun. When done right, studio apartments can look chic and spacious. Dividing your space effectively is key to this. Use sliding doors where possible to eliminate negative space where a standard door would open and consider using natural features of the home such as alcoves to separate living and sleeping arrangements. The use of large rugs can also be effective when dividing a large space, especially if they’re in contrasting colors to the rest of your décor.
Stick to Light and Bright Colors

Use Shelving and Hooks Instead of Cupboards in Kitchens
Cupboards take up a heck of a lot of space in kitchens and it may be more effective to make use of shelving instead. For pans you can use hooks and hang them above the stove or wherever suits. This actually adds a stylish and rustic feel to the home. Any essential pantry items can be stored in cupboards at ground level.
Make Use of Mirrors
Mirrors are perfect for creating the optical illusion of space in small areas. The best place for mirrors are on closet doors, especially if they’re sliding and are floor to ceiling length; they can literally double the perceived space in the room.
