The more coils the better – The better the innerspring model tested has 600 – 1000 coils. But if one mattress has more coils than the other, the coils can be made of thinner gauge metal. You must have heard about coil variations such as Bonnell, continuous wires and individually pocketed spring. None of these is superior.
Gel provides a cooler sleep – More than half innerspring mattresses have a layer of gel-infused foam that claims to provide a cooling effect, it’s worth noting that 10% of the mattress with the gel-infused, they still retain warmth. Tests have shown that in a spring mattress containing gel did tend to sleep slightly cooler but the reverse was true with gel-infused foam beds.
Forget About Comparison Shopping –If you have seen a mattress at one store and you ask elsewhere for something similar, you may be steered towards the same brand mattress that claims to have the same construction, components, and firmness. Manufacturers don’t publish a directory of comparable mattresses. So use rating as a guide and insist on the precise make and model that scored well in the test. Check the ratings of mattress brands and stores, based on subscriber surveys.
