Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES) are a set of regulations put forth by the government of India under the Central Pollution Control Board of India (CPCB) to control pollution levels released by internal combustion engines. The BSES standards were first introduced in the year 2000 and are based on the European regulations. The different set of regulations are termed as BS3, BS4, BS5, BS6 and so on. The number at the end denotes the rigidity and strictness of the regulations and the auto manufacturing companies have to abide by the standard set by the government.
The Bharat Stage 4 or the BS4 norms were set on April 1st 2017 by the Indian government for vehicle engines. The norms were said to have reduced Sulphur emissions by 86% thereby helping the environment. However, in April 2020, the government of India introduced the BS6 pollution norms skipping BS5 altogether due to the growing concerns of global warming.
Here’s what you should keep in mind while buying a used BS4 car:
The BS6 norms are only implemented on new cars right now
Since the BS6 norms have been introduced, people have been confused whether they will have to change their vehicle engines soon. The fact is that the BS6 norms will apply to the new cars for the time being and not to old cars which means you can buy and use existing BS4 cars without an issue.
There is no set deadline for BS4 Cars
Even though the BS6 regulations have been rolled out by the government in 2020, there is no set deadline for the BS4 engine cars yet. Only the sale of new BS4 cars will stop soon and the existing cars can run freely on the roads for now.
The BS4 variants will be available at cheaper rates
Since the BS6 regulations have been made mandatory, there is no point in buying a new BS4 norm car anymore. This means that rates for the used cars in Sacramento will drop and sellers will put them on sale for much cheaper rates due to the new norms. Hence, you can buy a pre-owned BS4 car easily right now.
The BS4 cars also require a pollution certificate
All motor vehicles running on Indian roads require a pollution certificate, so make sure that the second hand car you buy also has one and if not then get one immediately.
Second hand car loans
If you are planning to buy a used BS4 car then you can consider taking a used car loan which can provide you reduced rates for insurance, used car EMI and low used car loan interest rates that will help you finance your purchase. If you’re planning to get an SR22 policy, you can find affordable and reliable policies from Insurance Navy.
Converting an old BS4 engine into BS6 is not possible
Many customers might be wondering whether it is possible to convert an old BS4 car into a BS6 vehicle and the answer is NO as it is a really difficult process. Besides, the government has not stated any such loophole for the people so it might even be illegal.
Buying a used car with a BS4 engine should not be a problem given that you inspect the engine condition, legal papers and car’s condition. With new engines compliant with BS6 engine, the cars with BS4 engine would be available for cheaper rates. If you do not want to spend all your savings at once, go on and avail a used car loan to buy it this festive season.
