If you’ve ever asked yourself this, you’re already on the right path.

HVACS are similar to any piece of home technology. They require maintenance and routine care to properly function. But is there anything that can be done to make an entire HVAC system run better? Here’s what you should try to boost your HVAC’s performance:

Boost Performance on My HVAC

  • Replace Parts with Factory or Aftermarket – At some point, you’re going to have to do this, so why not tend to it early before something breaks? Check your compressor for visible signs of wear, replacing it altogether if you notice extensive damage. Are you in a region with cool temperatures at night, regardless of the time of year? You can outfit your HVAC with an economizer. It sucks in cool air from outside, reducing consumption and the costs associated with running an HVAC for long periods.
  • Use a Fin Comb – Fin combs are cheap and easy to buy. They usually resemble little hair clippers with guards at the tip, though you won’t want to style your hair with them. Instead, they can straighten out the fins on your condenser. Simply place the fin combs at the edge of the condenser, gently moving it until any flattened fins are straightened. Too many blocked fins can quickly age your HVAC and increase your monthly energy costs from excessive strain on the unit. Condensers push heat out of your home, which cannot adequately happen with fin blockage. For people with HVACS that seem to do a poor job controlling air temperature, this is a likely solution to the issue.
  • Change Those Filters! – Unless you’re using long-term air filters, you should be checking the temporary alternatives every 30 days. However, even the temps can last a bit longer, according to their quality and material. Of course, regions with lots of particulates in the air will need to undergo more filter changes, so consider getting a permanent air filter if you notice the disposables getting dirty too fast.
  • Make Sure Your Home is Properly Insulated – In a poorly insulated house or apartment, HVACs must work much harder, and will rapidly age. While it might not be feasible for everyone to install insulation behind their drywall, there are easier alternatives to consider. One is adding padding to the thresholds of all points of entry. These are typically doors, but in some cases, could be windows. For windows, use either plastic or rubber gaskets, vinyl tape, or foam. The goal is to seal up any holes where air can seep inside.
  • Program your Thermostat Correctly – If you aim to consume less energy, adjust your thermostat up a few degrees. Unless you’re in a very small apartment, you likely won’t notice any temperature change. Keeping your thermostat closer to the outside temperature can lower HVAC strain and cut your power consumption.
