Planning on moving soon? Overwhelmed with everything you have to do? Don’t worry; we have you covered. Our checklist will help ensure you don’t miss out on anything so you can have you packing done in a timely manner.

You’ll want to start packingsix weeks before you actually plan to move. These are the steps you should start with:

Sort your stuff.

You want to get rid of anything you don’t use or need and sort everything you plan on taking.

Look for a moving company.

If you want help with your move, it’s time you start looking. Make sure to get quotes from a few different organizations and make note of the services they provide so you can pick the best one.

Inform your children’s schools.

Contact their current school as well as the new school they’ll be moving to. This way all the appropriate records can be transferred smoothly.

One month before the move you want to do the following:

Confirm your movers.

You need to select a company and sort all the arrangements out with them. Book well in advance to get the date and time that’s best for you.

Get boxes.

When possible, get containers with lids rather than cardboard boxes. This will save you the hassle of setting up, taping, untaping, and breaking down dozens of boxes. You can also re-use the containers for storage at your new residence.

Start packing.

Things that you don’t frequently use can be packed in advance. Make sure to label the boxes so you know exactly where everything is. Make sure to keep an inventory of what is packed where; you can easily use a tablet or smartphone to do this.

Change of address

Several weeks before your move, change your address with USPS using an easy online service. This way all your mail will be forwarded to your new address.

One week before the move:

Confirm arrangements with the movers.

You want to follow up with the movers to make sure they will be where you need them, when you need them.

Inform utility companies of the move.

You want to make sure that the gas, electricity, phone, internet, and other utilities are all working at your new place. Don’t wait until you actually make the move to inform them; let them know a week before.

A few days before the move:

Pack suitcases and drive them over to your new place.

Pack the clothes and personal items you will need immediately after the move. Use suitcase, since they’re easier to transport. Drop them off at your new place a few days before the actual move so you will have them ready for use.

Complete payment.

Pay the movers if you haven’t already.

On moving day:

Supervise the move.

Make sure to double check the inventory provided by the movers with your own list.

Check for damage.

Once the boxes and items have been dropped off, make sure to check them for dents, scratches, scrapes, or other forms of damage.

Once you’re in your new residence with all your stuff safely inside, take a deep breath and look around – congratulations, you’ve done it!
